DIY FURNITURE.

If you’ve been following the brand for a while, then you’ll know we have a love for design and architecture. That love really comes from our desire to create…to make things from nothing. To create things that capture your attention whether you like it or not as long as we are able to break the monotony in your daily life and get you to notice something different.

I recently picked up a copy of a book that I think everyone should have. The book is titled DIY Furniture. It’s a book that features furniture designs by 30 different designers showing you how to make them from scratch. All the designs come with step by step instructions and the materials are something you can easily pick up from your local hardware store. Each design is unique in its own way and it’s definitely interesting to see what people can create from their mind using simple materials. As soon as I get some free time, I am going to enjoy making some of the pieces from the book. The powerful thing to me about the book is that it not only shows you how to make furniture on your own, but opens your mind to the different possibilities in doing so. It serves as a catalyst to allow you to start to explore different ideas that you might have once you get comfortable with making some of pieces in the book. That to me is one of the big reasons why I really love this book. Pick up a copy for yourself and enjoy. Create.

BIZ AS USUAL.

Another day at the Cookies -N- Cream NYC mobile shop. Thanks to all the folks that stopped by. I’ve said several times and will continue to say that we have some of the best folks supporting the brand. We couldn’t ask for a better group of supporters and we’re thankful for that. Check out a few pictures of some folks that stopped by recently below as well as random shenanigans at the shop.

Jon (Who is a DJ for those who don’t know) was spinning music from his Ipad via some DJ application. Cool app, does a decent job though the song transition on the app could be a little more seamless….and can someone tell Jon to wipe the face of his Ipad?

Jon stops spinning music at the mobile shop to do a quick interview….he’s living the life huh?

Family affair.

THE CHEF.

Our intern Cody aka “Cody The Chef” posted up at the NYC mobile shop, rocking our one of a kind Toy Lords of Chinatown mask. If you are wondering why we call him “The Chef”, it’s because he does a mean cooking dance. If you’re ever by the mobile and he’s there, ask them to throw on Lil B’s Wonton Soup and watch Cody cook you up a nice meal like a 5 star chef. It’s a sight to behold.

A few pictures from another day at the NYC Mobile shop.

Our friend and super amazing artist – MAD stopped by as well. He’s currently on tour for his collaborative work on the KIDROBOT x Swatch watches campaign that’s been buzzing like crazy. They even put up a huge billboard in Times Square with MAD’s design front and center. Yeah, he’s kind of a big deal. Good seeing you MAD!

and our good friend Lori stopped by as well and struck a few poses. No other way to describe Lori than super cool. We love her.

CREW LOVE.

Thanks a lot to all the folks that stopped by the mobile shop recently as well as everyone shopping online. As we always do, here’s some pictures of folks that stopped by. Unfortunately our camera ran out of power for one of the days we were taking pictures so we were forced to use our Galaxy Tab which didn’t take the best pictures but we made it work. Thanks again to everyone for stopping by and we’ll be out again this coming weekend. Do remember that you can shop 24/7 via our online shop as well.

….oh, the white lines in the pictures are snow flakes blowing in the wind…it wasn’t the best weather but you folks still stopped by the mobile shop and for that, you f*cking rock. Cheers.

2011.

Happy New Year! Wow, 2011…seems like only yesterday when we got into 2010. 2010 was an amazing year for the brand. We launched our very first mobile shop (and became the talk of the town and world), kicked off ToyStreet, got featured on MTV SuckerFree and Entrepreneur magazine, saw our following get even bigger on a global scale with over 20,000+ people visiting our site on the regular, did a bunch of exclusive designer toy collaborations and so many other wonderful things that I can’t seem to remember right now but you can always see by going through our 2010 site archives below. It was truly an incredible 2010 for us and to think that we’ve accomplished all of this in only 2 years. Thanks to everyone that is continually supporting the brand and we couldn’t have gotten this far without all of you.

2011 is going to be an even bigger year for the brand. We have plenty of things lined up as well as great expansion plans. As is our tradition, we will continue to try new things and challenge the norm as we grow. We still refuse to sell to retail stores (turned down over 35+ stores now) and the only way you will get our apparel is through us – mobile shop and/or online shop. The brand will only get even bigger from here on out but it will be done our way. You folks definitely have a lot of cool things to look forward to from us and we can’t wait to show the world all the creative madness we’ve been working on. Thanks again for all the support and continue to spread the word about us. Hope you had a great 2010 and may your 2011 be even better as well.

Cheers!

THE WAR OF ART.

Poster Boy: The War of Art

Dubbed by the New York Times as an “anti-consumerist Zorro with a razor blade, a sense of humor and a talent for collage,” Poster Boy deftly rearranges the text and images of subway posters, reclaiming walls from the ad industry one slice of vinyl at a time. This artful and clever repurposing of advertising has been hailed by the Guardian UK as “witty, web-savvy and economical… the only materials it requires are chutzpah, imagination and a 50-cent blade,” and, though the work exists only in New York City, Poster Boy has garnered a worldwide following.

Poster Boy: The War of Art is the first book to feature Poster Boy‘s renegade mashups-corporate copy slashed and re-pasted as sharp, playful puns and turns of phrase rich with innuendo and political punch. Under the edge of Poster Boy’s blade, beautiful models turn ghastly and iconic spokespeople become mouthpieces for guerrilla slogans.

Poster Boy proves no ad is safe from art’s incisive interventions.

Page Count: 96 pages, Size: 7 x 7 inches, Format: Casebound

LICHTENSTEIN.

I’m a big fan of Roy Lichtenstein’s work. In my opinion, he’s one of the greatest pop artists to have ever lived…and his influence still lives on. His style of comic book art mixed with parody is a form that I have always felt was genius. Genius in that it was something that you can relate to at all ages. Whether you’re the kid that just happens to like it because it is a comic book strip or the adult who reads the text, then looks at the image and gets the message, Roy’s work is something that will stop you in your tracks if you saw it. I found a few pictures of some pieces to put up here, but please do me a favor – go here to learn more about Roy and here to see a lot more work from him.

TOOFLY – BRAVE SOULS ILLUMINATE.

We’re so blessed to have many talented friends doing wonderful things. Such a great company of people to be in. To all our LA friends, here’s another dope art show coming your way. This one features the works of our very good friend TooFly. This is one show you don’t want to miss!

Upper Playground and Fifty24LA Gallery Present
“Brave Souls Illuminate”
A Collection of New & Existing works by Maria “TOOFLY” Castillo

Maria “Toofly” Castillo is a painter and illustrator from New York.
Growing up Queens, Toofly immersed herself in graffiti culture and developed her own knack for hand styles and unique “around the way girl” characters.

“Brave Souls Illuminate” is a re-mix of new, and existing works that showcase Toofly’s growth as young woman drawing and writing on the walls to a mature well respected fine artist, designer, and visual arts producer. Her existing works takes you on a journey of a self proclaimed, “around the way girl” using hard and fluid lines, hand styles, and self confidence to declare a spot in New York City’s graffiti subculture dominated by men, and fierce attitude.

Her new works re-introduce the shades of grey that originally helped her pull in the raw emotions she grew up with, and surfaces new and improved.
As she travels to reconnect time and space, the new pieces not only feel and look more mature, yet bring you back to the core of her spirit:
”A brave being who looks to shine bright unapologetic from the inside out!”

”Brave Souls Illuminate” features new works and an installation on display at FIFTY24LA Gallery from November 11 – January 4, 2009.

About TOOFLY
Toofly is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts where she applied her artistic skills to illustration and graphic design coursework. Her signature “around the way girl” character is instantly recognizable from print to public street art projects. She and her partner Alice Mizrachi founded Younity, a female urban arts collective, in which they produce art exhibitions, community street murals, and mentorship art programs for young women in the arts. Toofly’s art and design work have appeared in books, video and magazines including Graffiti Women, NYC Graffiti the Next Stage, Burning New York, Current TV, MTV, Trace, Marie Claire, and Juxtapoz.
