“Brave Souls Illuminate”
A Collection of New & Existing works by Maria “TOOFLY” Castillo
Maria “Toofly” Castillo is a painter and illustrator from New York.
Growing up Queens, Toofly immersed herself in graffiti culture and developed her own knack for hand styles and unique “around the way girl” characters.
“Brave Souls Illuminate” is a re-mix of new, and existing works that showcase Toofly’s growth as young woman drawing and writing on the walls to a mature well respected fine artist, designer, and visual arts producer. Her existing works takes you on a journey of a self proclaimed, “around the way girl” using hard and fluid lines, hand styles, and self confidence to declare a spot in New York City’s graffiti subculture dominated by men, and fierce attitude.
Her new works re-introduce the shades of grey that originally helped her pull in the raw emotions she grew up with, and surfaces new and improved.
As she travels to reconnect time and space, the new pieces not only feel and look more mature, yet bring you back to the core of her spirit:
”A brave being who looks to shine bright unapologetic from the inside out!”
”Brave Souls Illuminate” features new works and an installation on display at FIFTY24LA Gallery from November 11 – January 4, 2009.
About TOOFLY
Toofly is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts where she applied her artistic skills to illustration and graphic design coursework. Her signature “around the way girl” character is instantly recognizable from print to public street art projects. She and her partner Alice Mizrachi founded Younity, a female urban arts collective, in which they produce art exhibitions, community street murals, and mentorship art programs for young women in the arts. Toofly’s art and design work have appeared in books, video and magazines including Graffiti Women, NYC Graffiti the Next Stage, Burning New York, Current TV, MTV, Trace, Marie Claire, and Juxtapoz.

This is part 6 of a streetwear event they’ve been doing for a while, and it’s only gotten bigger and better. This one is going to be huge. So huge that it’s being called Australia’s biggest streetwear party!

Check out the amazing design on this pillow that was done by our friend – talented French illustrator Skwak. Incredible work. We’re big fans of Skwak’s work….BIG FANS. We will be dropping the collection of clothing we are doing with him in the very near future. You folks definitely have a lot of goodness to look forward to. We promise.

WOW! This is going to be one of the illest parties EVER! ILL Banger Thursdaze x Homebase NYC @ White Rabbit. Lawd have mercy! A night of the most fun you will ever have! We’re big supporters of anything that has to do with giving back to the community. Adam from Comon Cents hit us up to tell us about their brand and what they’re doing for their community in LA. Comon Cents is a clothing company locally based out of LA and are striving to bring art back into the hands of the youth. For every shirt that is bought from Comon Cents, a dollar is donated to a teacher in the LA Unified School District to help funding for art supplies. Their goal is to get art into the middle schools and high schools who cannot afford the program. I think it’s a pretty cool message and we definitely support programs that aim to empower the youth. LIMITED STAY TRUE PRINT BY SKET-ONE.
If you’ve read the info on our Stay True video magazine that will be dropping soon, then you’ll know the 1st 150 copies sold will be coming with a limited art print by respected artist/toy designer Sket-One. Sket-One is an individual that needs no introduction. His name is one that’s very well known on the graffiti scene & designer toy industry, and he’s a very accomplished illustrator who’s done work for a lot of big companies. His work and toys are collected by many people worldwide, even celebrities (won’t name drop anybody) and he was one of the first artists to customize a dunny for Kidrobot.
For the Stay True limited print, Sket hooked us up with this crazy dope print of his character – Ripple. Pardon my language, but the print is f*cking sick! I’m almost tempted to just keep all 150 prints! Just kidding, won’t do that to you folks but you better make sure you are one of the 1st 150 people that gets their hands on a copy of the dvd. The prints will also be individually numbered from 1 – 150 and will be the only one of its kind. Yes, you get a chance to own a piece of rare art.
