GRAYS.

Dope picture. So New York. The famous Gray’s Papaya.

Not sure when the picture was shot. I’m assuming it was before President Obama got in office due to the sign on the front. Picture lifted off Dov Charney’s page. I love their slogans, so classic.

THE DEALERS.

As the brand has grown over the years, we have been very tight with our brand distribution. We refused to go retail and turned down several stores that were interested in carrying the brand. We sold exclusively via our online and mobile shops. With the growth of the brand, we’ve had many more folks become a part of our family worldwide. Late last year, we decided to open up the brand to some select retail spots in an effort to make the brand a little more accessible. It wasn’t something that we needed to do, more so something that we wanted to do and felt was right for us at this point in the brand’s growth. With that in mind, we started to reach out to select spots where we would like our brand to be carried. We are taking our time with choosing these select spots. We don’t care to be everywhere, just in the places we really like and support what we’re about.

Here are the first 5 spots where the brand is now being carried. You can also see their information on our new STOCKISTS page.

AMERICANA.

As our brand continues to grow, one of the big plans for our future is to produce cut & sew items. Cut & Sew is a different beast than printed apparel and it’s been the downfall of many brands who weren’t prepared for the associated issues that come with that next level of production. There’s no rush for us. We’re taking our time to make sure when we get there, it’s done right and to the greatest quality we can produce. One thing though that constantly comes to mind when I think of our future in cut & sew is figuring out how to produce items locally. With most production being done in China and overseas, it’s tough to make stuff locally nowadays and most people feel the costs are too high which in turn leads to higher prices to the customer. With the rising costs of production in China, it will be interesting to see how things develop. The shift will probably move to other countries where production can be done cheaply and so on.

For us, trying to produce locally is something we are researching and working on. We are not against overseas production. To be honest, it’s good business and we understand that but for us, we feel it’s important to keep production domestic when possible. Who knows, maybe we might end up producing overseas but that will be our last option after we have weighed the costs and issues of producing domestically. I saw the video below and it’s pretty much what inspired this post. The Martin Greenfield factory in Brooklyn is an inspiration to us all. Enjoy the video and continue to stay tuned to our growth to see how things develop with our future in cut & sew. The brand’s future is bright.

COMING SOON.

If you’ve been following our twitter feed, you’ll recall that we hinted at a huge collaboration between us and our good friend, French artist Skwak. We’re still not ready to spill the beans yet but it is definitely something huge and we’re all very excited about it. We’ve built a great relationship with Skwak over the years as we have worked on various things and it feels so natural to take the next step with this amazing thing we’re working on. It’s going to be huge and you folks definitely have a lot to look forward to.

Here’s something that Skwak did a while back that I’ve always loved. He did an art piece that covered the walls of the Adidas Sneaker delight store in Lisbon. The beauty of the piece is that the whole thing was done in black and white so that people could color in the piece themselves. This was a genius idea to me. Allowing people to interact with the actual store and have an experience rather than just coming in to shop. It’s ideas like this that have always been at the core of who we are. Giving people an experience is necessary for any business. To us, that’s even more important than actually trying to sell anything. To break that monotony of what you already know is a big thing to us. It’s one of the reasons why we’re still here as a thriving brand in such a competitive market.

Enjoy the pictures below and stay tuned for the BIG announcement of our project with Skwak.

SOUND THE ALARM.

Today marks the release of a collaborative reggae mixtape with a good friend of ours – DJ Rampage titled Sound The Alarm. Rampage is an amazing DJ who has been around the party scene for some time and recently came off tour djaying for Lauryn Hill. As a past collaborator of ours and avid supporter of the brand, we got together again to put out another incredible mixtape.

Sound The Alarm is a curated collection of lover’s rock, roots and culture. It’s a really well thought out blend of reggae music that you will enjoy a lot.

Download the mixtape here. You can also listen to the mix in its entirety below.
Look out for many more music projects from the brand as 2012 comes about.

CANVAS.

As the brand has grown over the years, we have received many requests from people around the world who would like some of our tshirt graphics and brand imagery as art prints/canvas. We have done several of these as one offs but wanted to open the program to more people who might be interested in the same.

With that in mind, we have partnered with the folks at CanvasPOP to offer limited edition canvasses of any brand graphic or imagery. CanvasPOP is a company that produces high quality canvas prints of any artwork or picture. They pay great attention to the quality of their work and that is something that really stood out to us, and led to our partnership with them under this new initiative. We will be offering the canvasses in various sizes and are also able to do custom sizes by request. Each canvas print will be limited to 25 pieces only.

To launch the project, we are offering the Basquiat Dollar artwork from one of our past tees. The prints are available for pre-order via our online shop in these sizes – 8″ x 19″, 12″ x 29″, 20″ x 49″ and 30″ x 73″. Please let us know if you would like to get a custom size done and we can facilitate that. The canvas will come on a frame or can be sent as just a rolled canvas by request.

Please visit our online shop here where the Basquiat Dollar is now available.

Also, keep in mind that this applies to any other brand imagery you might like as a canvas. For example the Sex Toys images or any other image/graphics you see from us.

MATCHBOXES.

I’ve been looking at a lot of 1920s – 1950s matchbox artwork from around the world as inspiration for some new stuff we’re working on. It’s really interesting to see the imagery on all these boxes. I feel as if the matchboxes allowed artists at the time to express themselves in ways they couldn’t elsewhere. Here’s a few images from some of my find. You can use Google to see tons more images.
