Thanks to all the folks that stopped by the NYC mobile shop recently. We’re getting ready to drop the Spring 2012 collection soon so stay tuned to the site. This collection is a really dope one, probably some of our best work to date and I know you folks will like it a lot. In the meantime, check out a couple of pictures from a day hanging out at the mobile.

SOPA.

If you’ve been on Google today or some of your usual web destinations, you may have noticed or read the discussions about SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act). I took some time to educate myself about it before posting this. While the intent of the bill is good, the proposed means of achieving that intent is what is dangerous and should be stopped. It’s pretty obvious that the people who wrote this bill either don’t know how the internet works in the real world or are a bunch of power hungry idiots who want to turn us into one of the countries that controls the freedom of its people via internet censorship.

I took out an excerpt from the SOPA wiki page on a section that relates to web based businesses which we would definitely fall under. From the text below, you can clearly see that this is a dangerous bill if it goes through.

“An analysis in the information technology magazine eWeek stated, “The language of SOPA is so broad, the rules so unconnected to the reality of Internet technology and the penalties so disconnected from the alleged crimes that this bill could effectively kill e-commerce or even normal Internet use. The bill also has grave implications for existing U.S., foreign and international laws and is sure to spend decades in court challenges.”

Art Bordsky of advocacy group Public Knowledge similarly stated, “The definitions written in the bill are so broad that any US consumer who uses a website overseas immediately gives the US jurisdiction the power to potentially take action against it.”

On October 28, 2011, the EFF called the bill a “massive piece of job-killing Internet regulation,” and said, “This bill cannot be fixed; it must be killed.”

Gary Shapiro, CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, spoke out strongly against the bill, stating, “The bill attempts a radical restructuring of the laws governing the Internet,” and that “It would undo the legal safe harbors that have allowed a world-leading Internet industry to flourish over the last decade. It would expose legitimate American businesses and innovators to broad and open-ended liability. The result will be more lawsuits, decreased venture capital investment, and fewer new jobs.”

Lukas Biewald, founder of CrowdFlower, stated, “It’ll have a stifling effect on venture capital… No one would invest because of the legal liability.”

Booz & Company on November 16 published a Google-funded study finding that almost all of the 200 venture capitalists and angel investors interviewed would stop funding digital media intermediaries if the bill became law. More than 80 percent said they would rather invest in a risky, weak economy with the current laws than a strong economy with the proposed law in effect. If legal ambiguities were removed and good faith provisions in place, investing would increase by nearly 115 percent.

As reported by David Carr of The New York Times in an article critical of SOPA and PIPA, Google, Facebook, Twitter and other companies sent a joint letter to Congress, stating “We support the bills’ stated goals – providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ Web sites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting. However, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of Web sites.”[24][53] Smith responded, saying, the article “unfairly criticizes the Stop Online Piracy Act,” and, “does not point to any language in the bill to back up the claims. SOPA targets only foreign Web sites that are primarily dedicated to illegal and infringing activity. Domestic Web sites, like blogs, are not covered by this legislation.” Smith also said that Carr incorrectly framed the debate as between the entertainment industry and high-tech companies, noting support by more than “120 groups and associations across diverse industries, including the United States Chamber of Commerce.”

Go here to do something about it. If you definitely agree that this bill should not pass as we do, contact your congressman and make your voice heard.

As the brand has grown over the years, we have been very tight with our brand distribution. We refused to go retail and turned down several stores that were interested in carrying the brand. We sold exclusively via our online and mobile shops. With the growth of the brand, we’ve had many more folks become a part of our family worldwide. Late last year, we decided to open up the brand to some select retail spots in an effort to make the brand a little more accessible. It wasn’t something that we needed to do, more so something that we wanted to do and felt was right for us at this point in the brand’s growth. With that in mind, we started to reach out to select spots where we would like our brand to be carried. We are taking our time with choosing these select spots. We don’t care to be everywhere, just in the places we really like and support what we’re about.

AMERICANA.

As our brand continues to grow, one of the big plans for our future is to produce cut & sew items. Cut & Sew is a different beast than printed apparel and it’s been the downfall of many brands who weren’t prepared for the associated issues that come with that next level of production. There’s no rush for us. We’re taking our time to make sure when we get there, it’s done right and to the greatest quality we can produce. One thing though that constantly comes to mind when I think of our future in cut & sew is figuring out how to produce items locally. With most production being done in China and overseas, it’s tough to make stuff locally nowadays and most people feel the costs are too high which in turn leads to higher prices to the customer. With the rising costs of production in China, it will be interesting to see how things develop. The shift will probably move to other countries where production can be done cheaply and so on.

For us, trying to produce locally is something we are researching and working on. We are not against overseas production. To be honest, it’s good business and we understand that but for us, we feel it’s important to keep production domestic when possible. Who knows, maybe we might end up producing overseas but that will be our last option after we have weighed the costs and issues of producing domestically. I saw the video below and it’s pretty much what inspired this post. The Martin Greenfield factory in Brooklyn is an inspiration to us all. It was an amazing 2011. The brand kept growing at an incredible pace and we’re thankful to everyone for their continued support. 2012 is going to be an even bigger year for us. SEX TOYS.

We’re excited to announce a new on going project titled Sex Toys. Sex Toys is an art project that will feature photography of nude women in poses with collectible art toys. It will be produced on an on going basis from the brand and we will also release limited items featuring photography from the project. The first shoot features our friend Tabi Love and was shot by talented photographer Chandler Easley.

CANVAS.

As the brand has grown over the years, we have received many requests from people around the world who would like some of our tshirt graphics and brand imagery as art prints/canvas. We have done several of these as one offs but wanted to open the program to more people who might be interested in the same.

With that in mind, we have partnered with the folks at CanvasPOP to offer limited edition canvasses of any brand graphic or imagery. CanvasPOP is a company that produces high quality canvas prints of any artwork or picture. They pay great attention to the quality of their work and that is something that really stood out to us, and led to our partnership with them under this new initiative. We will be offering the canvasses in various sizes and are also able to do custom sizes by request. Each canvas print will be limited to 25 pieces only.

To launch the project, we are offering the Basquiat Dollar artwork from one of our past tees. The prints are available for pre-order via our online shop in these sizes – 8″ x 19″, 12″ x 29″, 20″ x 49″ and 30″ x 73″. Please let us know if you would like to get a custom size done and we can facilitate that. The canvas will come on a frame or can be sent as just a rolled canvas by request.

Shouts to our family at URNewYork, who just had the killer show at Miami Art Basel.

Ski & 2esae of URNewYork in our long sold out Sweet Dreams and Bodega tees, posted up with Actor Bryan Greenberg (Ben) from HBO’s How To Make It In America…yeah that show that everybody always tells us reminds them of us. If you’re in Miami, definitely check out the URNewYork show. The exhibition is still running till December 15th.
