FELA KUTI.

I’ve been slacking on our music posts…sorry folks, things have been pretty hectic here with all the things we have going on. However, I am going to make up for it with this post. As you know (if you’ve been following our blog), we like to listen to all types of music. For your enlightenment and enjoyment, it’s with great honor that I’m posting this track from the legendary Fela Kuti. I am going to do a full post on Fela sometime in the near future but in the meantime if you don’t know who he is, please go here right now! In not so many words, this man is the epitome of greatness. I don’t even want to start talking about him because I won’t know when to stop. Enjoy one of his many songs below.

Fela Kuti – Army Arrangement

By the way, his song titled Zombie was also used in the latest Grand Theft Auto video game – GTA IV. Here’s a link to check that out as well.

Pure genius.

SYMBOLIC.

I’ve always been fascinated with symbols and how they’ve come to represent or stand for something in our minds. Of course, there’s no other place where this is more evident than in fashion. You can look at the 2 crossing C’s and know that’s Chanel, or see the check mark and know that’s Nike, or see the styled LV and know that’s Louis Vuitton or see the Adam Bomb and know that’s The Hundreds etc I can go on and on but pretty much what I’m trying to say is that the power of branding with symbols is an amazing thing, and that’s why companies spend millions promoting and protecting their brand symbols. I’ve been playing around with coming up with a symbol for us and I believe I have it…

straight from my sketchbook….

I wanted a symbol that represented the letters of the brand and also looked great by itself…the concept is 2 C’s joined together..so there’s one C above and another C beneath it, and they’re connected in a way that makes the whole symbol look like an “and” symbol…Cookies -n- Cream.

Here’s the final hand sketch…it came out pretty dope. Of course, it”ll look much cleaner once we bring to life on the computer. Expect a lot of quality products from us with this new symbol.

You’ve just witnessed greatness in the making.

CHURCH OF HYPEBEAST.

Even though we haven’t dropped our Fall ’08 sweatshirts yet (should be ready this coming Friday), we’ve started work on the Spring ’09 collection titled “Who Killed Streetwear?” which is a parody of the streetwear scene. It’s going to be a really dope collection and we’re probably going to get a lot of people offended, but that’s the best part of it. I figured I’d give you guys a sneak peek at the graphics of one of the pieces for the collection. This one is called Church of Hypebeast. If you don’t get it right now, don’t worry – I’ll explain when we’re ready to drop the Spring ’09 collection. For now, look forward to the Fall sweatshirts dropping this Friday/Saturday!!!

We’ve got a lot of heat dropping starting with the Fall ’08 sweatshirts…Things will never be the same.

BASQUIAT, PAPER PLANES, WANTED & THE MOB.

We should finally be receiving our Fall sweatshirts by the end of this month. We were forced to change plans as far as the items we wanted to do which is the reason why we’re a little behind schedule. Still, we’re dropping some really nice pieces. Since the items will be available really soon, I decided to showcase the graphics of each shirt and let you folks get a sneak peek at what’s coming. We’re only going to be doing 4 sweatshirts for Fall, and our collection is titled “Under The Influence”.

First up is the BASQUIAT sweatshirt.

If you’ve been an avid follower of our brand, you’ll know by now that we’re strongly influenced by street & contemporary art amongst many other things. We really dig and respect Basquiat’s work, and the legacy he’s left behind. Matter of fact, if you can remember, back in July – I did a post titled Basquiat – I am Legend where I basically paid homage to him. The BASQUIAT sweatshirt will feature the image above on a black sweatshirt, and the words below on the lower back of the sweatshirt.

Second is the M.I.A inspired sweatshirt titled PAPER PLANES.

Yep, we took the hook from M.I.A’s Paper Planes song and that’ll be featured on the front of this sweatshirt. We like M.I.A and her creativity. We’ve always respected the fact that she’s not afraid to take chances which is something we can identify with. Her song – Paper Planes put her on the map, and if you don’t believe me, take a look at the video which has 20 million views on Youtube. 20 million!!! This sweatshirt is guaranteed to sell out quick so you better get in your order as soon as they drop! Color of the sweatshirt will be Navy Blue.

Third is THE COOKIES MOB sweatshirt -

As young kids growing up in NYC, we’ve always loved gangster movies and pretty much anything related to the mob/mafia. I remember we would watch all these gangland flicks, and then try to interpret it into our own lifestyle. So when we started this brand, we toyed with the idea of tying it into our love for mob movies/lifestyle, and hence the birth of “The Cookies Mob”. The Cookies Mob is our street collective of people who appreciate and support our brand. So all you folks that follow our brand and buy our products are all honorary members of The Cookies Mob. To learn about how you can further become involved in the mob, or to get “made”, shoot an email to thecookiesmob(at)BakedinNY.com. The Cookies Mob sweatshirt will come in brown only.

Fourth and last is the WANTED POSTER sweatshirt –

This sweatshirt was inspired by old western Wanted Posters. You know..back in the days, when they offered money for the arrest of some gunslinger in some little town in the middle of nowhere..yeah those times. This image is also of our actual poster that we’ll soon be plastering NYC with, once the Fall sweatshirts drop. So if you happen to buy this sweatshirt, wear it and then walk past a poster of it in NYC – smile because it is all part of our elaborate scheme to take over the world. This sweatshirt will be available in Dark Heather (gray).

So that’s pretty much it, there’s a secret image thats on the last 3 sweatshirts which I left out. I can’t give away everything just yet. Gotta wait till we get the actual pieces to see. Also, all sweatshirts are Euro-cut, 80% combed cotton, 20% polyester, Brushed 320G/9.6 OZ…pretty much, the quality is top notch. The feel and cut is amazing. As always, items are limited and once sold out, that’s it. End of the month, they’ll be dropping. Get Ready!

BOXES.

One of the more fun and exciting aspects of building our brand is getting to work on packaging or deciding how we want our items presented to you folks. For now, we’re sticking with bakery boxes, but as we grow, expect more unique packaging ideas. Recently, we picked some box samples to decide what the fall sweatshirts should come in, and we’ve got a winner……..

Here’s the line-up from which we made our selection –

and the winner is (drumroll please…….)

Why did we pick this one? We really liked the wooden look of the box..simple, modern and just so dope. We can’t wait till you folks start to receive your items in the boxes. Oh, and don’t blame us if people think you’re actually carrying food instead of our clothing…yeah, we get that a lot….
Here’s one of the fall sweatshirts (will be available soon) tucked nicely in it’s box…Sick.

VOTE OR DIE.

From the title, I know you folks probably thought this post is about the current presidential race but it’s not. I do just want to say that everybody should register and vote during this election like your life depended on it..which is the probably the case with the way our economy is going. I digress, this post is to support our resident toy designer – Mekazoo in his quest to get one of his t-shirt designs printed on the crowd-sourcing t-shirt print site called Design By Humans. Really cool guy..so show some support… here’s the design and the link to vote is right under it….

BANKSY MANIA.

If you’re in NYC or follow street art, I’m sure you’ve probably heard of Banksy‘s latest installation in NYC. If not, hit up Wooster Collective for the scoop. Instead of us talking about the same thing, we decided to do something different on Banksy, and that is display some of his artwork that we really like. Enjoy…

MORE SHOTS OF CLAY KITO.

The big homie – Dave Cortes sent me some more shots of KITO as a clay sculpt. We’re going to be taking a closer look at this point to decide if we want to tweak or add anything to the sculpt. It’s looking pretty good so far. Simple figure. Simple sculpt. If we don’t make any changes, it will get cleaned up at this point and then it’ll be ready to paint. Once it’s painted, we get a better look at what the final piece will look like. Stay tuned…things are heating up….

CELLPHONE WATCH.

As an individual that loves watches, it’s going to be pretty interesting to see where watch design and functionality is headed in the near future. Via Core77, I just saw this cellphone watch that’s being made by a company called Chinavision…I like it, what do you think?

FEELING GOOD.

I’m feeling really good about our future plans for the brand and they way things are progressing…yes, we’re still a small brand with limited resources but we’re growing at a really good pace and making the best of everything…While we’ve had to compromise here and there on a few things, the one thing we won’t comprise on is the quality of our products and making sure we grow a brand that is authentic to us and the people that follow our brand. With that said, I thought I would share how I feel with you through music…Here’s the best way I can express myself to you right now – This song is timeless.

Feeling Good by the great Nina Simone.

The person who posted this on youtube did a nice little video too using motion graphics. Good creative work.

I love Nina Simone. She’s one of the greatest musicians to have ever lived. R.I.P.
We might drop a tee inspired by Nina in the near future. We’ll see.

PUGZEE IS COMING.

Our master toy sculptor/designer – Dave Cortes sent over some production shots of his Pugzee piece that will be dropping soon. These images are of the figure with no paint…make sure you pay attention to the level of detail shown in these pieces. The level of production is top-notch..Can’t wait to get the final piece in my hand. Also, I posted what the final piece will look once it’s finished below…Stay tuned.

P.S – Pugzee is straight out of Red Hook, Brooklyn too…How ill is that?

One of our resident toy designers – Derin (from Istanbul, Turkey) sent some sketches of some stuff he’s been working on…couple of sketches of different concepts he’s been toying with. Check ‘em out below. Also, you can visit him at Mekazoo which is his personal project that he’s also working on…very talented individual…expect a lot of dope things to come out from Cookies n Cream and Mekazoo…

I am particularly fond of this design called Boomrabbit…

FASHION GUYS.

Even though we’re more of a streetwear brand, we’re still influenced by high fashion and the designers behind these brands. I dug in our stash of books to show you images from one of my favorite fashion books…

The designers in this book are some of the best high fashion menswear designers…

A closer look at some of the names…

Great stuff…pick up a copy and check it out.

GRANTING WISHES.

Via Wooster Collective, I found out about about a “group that set up a table in New York’s Union Square and gave away “instant grants” to those people who pitched them projects.” The group is called The Federation of Students and Nominally or Unemployed Artists.

From the Federation’s website:

How It Works

We all learn art in school. Every kid loves to draw at some point. People get fascinated with the details of their new camera, or spend free time writing poems. But eventually, there’s a not a teacher telling you how great your are, or the camera gets put away, or you just plain get busy and stop. Years could go by before you start again, if you ever do at all.

The FSNUA aims to re-inspire creative thinking and action in everyday people by removing a small barrier and providing encouragement. We give small, unsecured grants in the form of $10-$60 for creative projects thought up on the spot by everyday people. In the past this has included a merchant marine, two 10 year old girls, a US soldier on leave from Iraq, an accordion player from Alaska, and around 40 others. We funded their new paintings, drawings, knitting, and photojournalism projects, and the repair of one accordion. Projects that may not have happened had they not come across 10 people in the park to support and inspire the thought.

Beyond the small amount of money, the project encourages people to see themselves as something other than workers or consumers even if it just for the length of time required to apply for the FSNUA grant. We also hope to re-inspire dormant desires to create while presenting an example of generosity without an ulterior motive.

KUNG-FU ELECTION.

This is probably one of the coolest things to come out of this election other than the fact that Obama is making history of course, but a company based out of Brooklyn called Starving Eyes has created a free online video game called Kung-Fu Election that pits political candidates against each other. Think of Mortal Combat, but with Obama, McCain, Palin, Giuliani, Hillary Clinton etc all fighting each other.

This game is too ill for me to describe and you have to go check it out here. I’m starting to get very good with my Obama but Sarah Palin has this crazy roll move that she does that’s been killing me..only thing I wish was that they had put in a George Bush character, I would’ve beat the shit out of him, sorry I meant I would have given him a handshake (Big brother might be reading our blog..don’t want any problems).

OBEY THE FAIREY.

NYTimes has a nice article about street artist – Shepard Fairey from OBEY. It’s a decent article that talks about how Shepard is starting to get mainstream appeal but still keeping it true to the art form by doing street pieces. I like the way the story was written because it follows Shepard and his crew on a night of posting up street pieces. It’s inspiring to see that cats like Shepard who have accomplished a great deal still get down like they’re still hungry…This is a dude that sells pieces of his art for thousands of dollars, and he’s in the streets posting up free artwork on walls, billboards etc risking police arrests and whatever else…This is what winners are made of, in my opinion. Being fearless and willing to take risks. You gotta respect it..even if you don’t “get” it. Here’s some pics of from the article..all lifted from the NYTimes.

Picture of Shepard…

MEZCO TALK.

Mez from Mezco Toyz recently did an interview with NHTVSN and it was a nice piece. Check it out below..as a side note, our toy sculptor/designer – Dave Cortes has done a lot of work for Mezco Toyz amongst many other big toy companies…Just thought I’d point that out.

By the way, you know we have our own designer toy projects right? and the first piece we’re working on is named KITO and we’re going to be dropping a lot more dope pieces right? Oh ok..
