Go here to learn more about Lupus if you’re not too familiar with the disease. All proceeds from this event will go to the Alliance for Lupus Research. We’ve also donated some Cookies n Cream tees that will be given away as part of a raffle which also includes other giveaways. This event happens this Friday at Plumm..flyer is below…

and then beginning on Oct 7th, head down to streetwear boutique – SHQ (Sugarhead Quarters) in the Lower East Side to check out street photographer Ricky Powell’s exhibition. Ricky is showing pictures from his stash so it’s definitely something you want to check out…and here’s the flyer for that..

WEALTH IS OF THE MIND.

In addition to all our other influences, another thing we’ve always believed in is READING…yes, slackers – actually picking up a book to read. I’ve done a couple of posts in the past with some book recommendations but I fell off due to how busy we’ve been. Well I’m back, and this time, I’m throwing a nice little jewel of a book your way. Also with the current state of our economy and financial markets, I think this book is something we can all use. The name of the book is “The Richest Man in Babylon” and it’s by George S. Clason. It’s a popular book that talks about wealth using really interesting stories that are set in ancient Babylon. It’s simple, interesting to read and uses a very effective approach on an age old topic…trust me, this is not your typical “get wealthy now” book, plus it’s inexpensive ($7) and a really short read. Pick it up and I promise that you will not be disappointed. Don’t forget who mentioned this book to you when your pockets get fat…

These 7 rules pretty much sum up the premise of the book..you’ll have to read the chapters to fully understand what each rule is really about…

SKATER KICKS.

Just caught a pretty cool article in the NY Times about skate sneakers. It’s an interesting though short piece that chronicles skate sneakers and their durability. It also mentions the current trend of skate type sneakers being worn as more of a lifestyle sneaker than to actually skate. Nothing we don’t know already but you can check out the article here…It’s a nice little read. I jacked them for the pics below…

There’s also a nice audio/visual narrative with more pics, and you can peep that here.

THE COMING OF KITO.

I just got some images of KITO as clay, in its rough stages from our master toy sculptor/designer – Dave Cortes. We’re pretty excited to see things coming along with our first designer toy. We’ll continue to post images as KITO develops from the rough stages to the final piece.

This is only the beginning and expect great things from the designer toys side of our brand. We’re just getting started….

COOKIES ON THE RADIO.

I’ve always wanted to do this post but kept forgetting to do it..In another attempt to show you how the Cookies n Cream bug has been infiltrating the world or as just a matter of “associative genius” (I made that up), I thought I’d point out that one of the hottest bands in the world – TV On The Radio named their 3rd album from 2006 – Return To Cookie Mountain…and that was a great album..

Pic of TV On The Radio….

I also found this pic of the band as lego pieces….dope.

by the way, their new album titled Dear Science is out now, so treat yourself to a copy…

Here’s the video for “Wolf like me” off Return to Cookie Mountain. This is my shit joint too..

THE PLAGUE OF THE MUSICIANS.

Ran down to Pearl Paint by Canal street to pick up a sketchbook and a few other art supplies, and ran into a street artist named DV that had these crazy images of popular rappers/rockstars but with their skin looking like they have some sort of disease..it’s crazy but pretty dope at the same time..I like the fact that it’s kind of different too because a lot of times when you see street artists doing these kind of images, it’s typically the same with no unique view point..you know I had to get some pics for ya’ll…

Here’s DV…

HIRSTED.

If you’re an art lover and have been following the news lately, then you know that legendary British artist Damien Hirst just accomplished a major feat. For those that need to play catch up – go here to read about Damien Hirst. He is considered to be the world’s second most expensive living artist, with the first being Jasper Johns. Damien just had a 2-day art sale titled “Beautiful Inside My Head Forever” in which he bypassed the regular way of selling art which is through dealers, and put up his work for auction directly at Sotheby’s. This is typically unheard of, and some critics thought that it would be a bust. Well, eat you hearts out critics because the sale was a huge success and brought in an estimated $200.7 million which was more than the estimated $177.6 million predicted by Sotheby’s. I love when people think outside the box, and much props to Damien for doing that. You can read the full articles about it at the New York Times here and here. I lifted some images from the Times as well. First pic is of Damien and one of the pieces…others are just regular pics from the auction..

By the way if you’re wondering why we’re talking about this on our blog, then go here…make sure you pay particular attention to the part that says “influenced by art”…

BUZZ.

I was down by Union Square the other day, and happened to run into a band that had just finished performing at an event sponsored by the Virgin Mega Store. The name of the band is The Lightyears and they’re from the UK. I chatted with two of the bandmates – Chris and George. Pretty cool cats. I checked out their music on their website – www.TheLightyears.com and I like what I’m hearing so far. Give it a listen and let me know what you think. I took this pic below…

KITO FIRST.

Okay folks, we’re switching gears a little..We were going to drop two toys as part of our first collection of designer toys but we’ve changed our mind and decided we’ll be doing only one to start off. The first piece we’ll be doing is our head cookie monster – KITO who is also a Capo in The Cookies Mob. Pictured below. If you’ve been following our brand, then you’re definitely familiar with KITO. He’s the image on our Posters, he’s had his own tee, and he is embroidered on the back of our Fall sweatshirts (coming soon) right by the neck. He’s one of the monsters that keeps things running in our underground bakery/ice cream shop where we make all our garments. Once we’ve unleashed KITO to the world as a vinyl toy in limited numbers, then we’ll continue working on THE GULLIES. We’ll be putting up the images of KITO in various stages of production as he comes to life as a vinyl piece. It’s going to be a fun ride…glad you folks are coming along…

TOY STORY.

I had a chance to head down to Dave Cortes‘ studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn to talk some business. The feeling I got once I stepped into the studio was something I can’t explain. The studio was filled with all the different pieces he’s done and it was a lot..the studio was covered wall to wall with toys. I felt like Charlie walking into The Chocolate Factory for the first time from the movie – Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. It was truly an amazing feeling to be in the presence of all this toy art, and I felt like I had just stumbled into the fantasy of every kid in the world and toy collector.

I had a great time at the studio too. Me and Dave spoke for hours about everything – from toys, to clothing, to music, branding, graffiti, online video, to the neighborhood in Red Hook and of course about his designer toy – PUGZEE that will be dropping soon. I was able to get lots of pictures and here they go. First, we start with a picture of the genius himself – Dave Cortes…

Then we get into the toys…

Pugzee in different styles…

Kid Rock..chillin…

I took way more pics than this, but this is all I’m putting up for now. It’s a Friday night and I’m about to hit up a club..

DAVE CORTES & THE INU ART COLLECTIVE.

As you all know by now, Cookies n Cream houses two projects – one is our clothing and the other is designer toys. We’ve started working on our first set of limited edition pieces, and in our quest to create pieces of toy art with the greatest quality, we’ll be working with one of the best toy sculptors in the world..yeah you heard me right – one of the best toy sculptors in the world.

His name is Dave Cortes and he runs his studio/company called INU ART out of Brooklyn NYC. You might not know who he is but I am sure you’re familiar with his work. Ironman, Hellboy, Incredible Hulk, Tony Montana (Scarface), Captain America, Venom, Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Carribean) – if you’ve seen any of these pieces, then you know who Dave Cortes is. He’s the mastermind that sculpted all these pieces and these are just a few names from some of the stuff that he’s done. He’s done work for some of the biggest names in the toy industry like Mezco Toyz, McFarlane Toys, Toy Biz and NECA amongst many others. The level of detail in his pieces are unparalleled. From facial expressions to body shapes and curves, every little detail is created to be life-like. This is art at its finest. I was able to secure an interview with Dave and some pics. Enjoy.

C -n- C: First things first, introduce yourself to the people. Name and occupation?
Dave: Dave Cortes, Sculptor, concept artist, Toy Designer and founder of Inu Art.

C -n- C: Did you always want to be a toy sculptor or did you have other aspirations?
Dave: Actually, I stumbled onto sculpture and found that it was the medium for me. The same goes for working in the toy industry.

C -n- C: How did you get into toy sculpting?
Dave: A good friend of mine showed me an ad that was posted in Wizard magazine calling for sculptors by McFarlane Toys. Luckily by that time I had a few sculptures made out of Sculpey (Tupac, Mike Tyson, Denise Rodman) that I could show. Although I didn’t feel good about the work I submitted it anyway. I guess the art director at McFarlane Toys, Ed Frank, saw some potential in my work because 9 months later, when all hope was gone; I got a call from Ed asking me to come in for an interview. Things went well that day and I left with a paying gig, 2 years later, I decided to go freelance from full-time at McFarlane Toys and have been ever since.

C -n- C: How long have you been in the business?
Dave: I’ve been making figures for just less than 10 years now.

C -n- C: Can you walk us through the process of sculpting a toy?
Dave: First there’s this idea, concept, then some artwork is created, sometimes tight, specific artwork or just some quick sketches to further communicate this idea. If it is a movie product like Hellboy or Kill Bill, the images from the movie are used as the reference art and maybe a quick drawing of the pose is included. Then I take it from there and rough out a figure in clay. Establishing the proper proportions (if necessary) pose and weight of the character. Sometimes this process is completely different, for example if it is going to be a super articulated character, it will not be sculpted in a pose and most of the painstaking work will be in trying to make the figure perfectly symmetrical.

C -n- C: You’ve done a lot of really cool toys for a lot of big companies, do you have any special piece that you like most?
Dave: I tend to lean toward the figures that I was able to design along the way. The stylized Scarface figure I did for Mezco was a lot of fun. At first when I got the project I wasn’t excited at all, I was intimidated by the idea of trying to make something stylized out of a movie that is so gritty and dark. And besides all that I was a big fan of Scarface and did not want to make a whacked figure. In the end I had fun with it and some of those concerns that I had were real because not everyone goes for stylized figures, but Mez covered all corners and put out some realistic figures and a bust, all of which I’m proud of.

C -n- C: You’re from Brooklyn and you also run your company out of Red Hook, Brooklyn. In an age where most companies are outsourcing a lot of toy sculpting/production overseas, how does it feel to be a home grown company and also be able to maintain a profit?
Dave: To tell you the truth considering how cheap it is to get something made in China, I’m amazed that I get work at all. In the end there is a difference, huge difference in fact. If you are going for a certain feel on an original design you might want to work closely with someone who can relate to your idea and that’s where the overseas thing becomes a problem, I hear. The other thing is that all Sculptors have their own style, just like comic book artists or painters. So when you choose to pay the extra dough to have it made here, you’re also paying for that sculptor’s style, which might be the reason that the buyer is drawn to it. Now I’m not talking about reputation, that’s totally different, that can sell a piece whether it is good or not. I’m just talking about looking at a piece on the shelf and saying now that’s a cool toy, then picking up the package to find out who sculpted it.

C -n- C: Are you going to be working on your own toys?
Dave: Actually I am finally making an Inu Art original Toy. It’s probably not the kind of work that would be expected from me, but I have a bunch of ideas that I feel like I finally have to try and get off the ground. This first figure is called Pugzee, it will be a stylized roto figure hopefully ready for the New York Comic Con Feb. 2009. I will soon have a website dedicated to the character Pugzee.com, where you will be able to see what it’s all about.

PUGZEE

C -n- C: What kind of things do you like to do outside of work?
Dave: These days I’ve been doing a lot of concept work for animation. I’ve been learning the 3D program Maya so that I can have more control over my designs and even take it further and animate them.

C -n- C: What other plans do you have for your company – Inu Art and where do you see things progressing towards?
Dave: I see things progressing towards digital and I plan to take my company in that direction. I hope to offer concept designs for not just toys, but also film and TV and other visual media. I work with a talented group of guys and we have a wealth of ideas that we do nothing with.

C -n- C: Other than major toy companies, are you open to working with smaller independent start-ups?
Dave: I’m completely open to working with independent companies if the project is right. The independent toy maker is the only one able to take the risk of going with a new radical design. Big companies have too many people to answer to so they won’t take those risks. I played it safe for a while and these days I’m all about trying something new.

C -n- C: For the individual out there who wants to get into toy sculpting, What advice do you have?
Dave: Just sculpt! The details of making a prototype for an action-figure are the part that’s easiest to learn. Sharpen your skills as a sculptor and take your raw talent to the next level. Sculpt everything and try all styles. If you are good at making muscle bound comic characters, try making a female. Same goes for style, if cartoony characters are the only thing that make up your body of work, try some realism. It always helps to show the diversity of your skill. Most importantly, photograph your work. If you’re one of those guys that’s never satisfied and crumbles a sculpture about half way through, make sure you photograph it first. In the end it’ll help to have photographs of those unfinished stages of your work.

C -n- C: Any last words or info for the people?
Dave: Check out www.inuart.com and check up on www.pugzee.com. I hope to soon have that up and running.
The Inu Art studio is,
Dave Cortes Sculptor, founder
Masahiro Ito Sculptor
Brandy Anderson Painter
Evor Guevarra Sculptor, fabricator
Jeff Feligno Sculptor, Digital sculptor
Diomedes Chaverra Molding & Casting
Ken Usanami Sculptor

As a side note, Pugzee will also be available in the Cookies n Cream online store when it’s ready to hit the market. Pieces are limited, so you better get yours once we put them up because these are guaranteed to go like fresh cookies.

GULLIES.

As most of you already know, we’re a part clothing/designer toy brand and if you didn’t know that, then go here. So while we countdown to the drop of our Fall collection, we’ve been busy working on our first set of designer toys. We’ll be dropping only two pieces to start off all in limited numbers. One of the first pieces to drop is a character from a street crew we’re calling THE GULLIES. It’ll be a 6″ piece or we may go smaller at 3″, still trying to decide. Here’s a quick sketch of what it will look like before we add all the finer details. keep in mind that this is just a sketch and we may add or change some things as we see fit.

If you don’t already know where the name GULLIES come from, then you’re probably still trying to figure out what that means or the reasoning behind the name. GULLY is a term we use in NYC that means tough guy or “won’t stand for any nonsense”. This first character out of THE GULLIES crew represents our brand’s attitude about being here for the long haul and ready to stand our ground against competition and all the naysayers. For a more in depth tutorial on what GULLY means, check out the urban dictionary.

As we bring the character more to life, we’ll continue to post images on here. These first toys are really exciting to us as we start to embark on the other side of our brand. This is just the beginning. You are watching greatness in the making.

PARADING PARADERS.

Today was the West Indian American day parade in Brooklyn and I stopped by to enjoy the festivities, music and food. If you don’t know what the West Indian day parade is, think of it like a BIG Carribean party in the heart of Brooklyn. You have people from all the different Carribean islands, finger-licking good food, great music, scantily clad women, colorful costumes, all types of drinks and much more..all of this in the streets of Brooklyn..It’s like Brooklyn literally shuts down for the parade..traffic is crazy, there’s music blasting everywhere, there’s flags everywhere..and I mean everywhere. You have to be there to witness it if you’ve never visited. Guaranteed great time. I took some pics when I could..I was too busy enjoying the music, food, sights and a nutcracker (if you don’t know what a nutcracker is, do some research). Pics are below. Enjoy.

..till next year..
