Ok so we’re going to be starting this thing called Reminisce Fridays where we post a classic hip hop song/video every Friday. You won’t know which video it will be and neither will we, until Friday when one of our cookie monsters delivers that Friday’s video to us. So definitely check the site every day especially on Fridays to see what the song/video will be each week. Just as a teaser and to get your mind prepared for what’s about to happen every Friday, here’s a lil sumpin sumpin…

WRISTWATCHES FROM THE FUTURE.

Some people say you can tell a lot about someone based on the type of wristwatch they wear. For the most part, I tend to agree with that statement. Since I’ve always been into creative or different watches, someone who saw my watch would definitely be able to tell that I’m the creative type. Presently I rock the Dictator watch from Nixon, and it’s treated me well plus I like the voice recorder on the watch even though I barely use it. People are always asking what kind of watch it is, and what I tend to hear people call it the most is “Inspector gadget watch”. I am now looking to purchase another watch and just discovered some really cool watches by this Japanese company called Tokyoflash. Not only do these watches look nice but they also challenge the “normal” way of telling time. Since they have a pretty nice selection, I feel like a kid in a candy store and can’t decide which one to buy. Pictured below are the ones I’m leaning towards. I’ll let you folks know which one I decide on.

or I may just go with another Nixon watch. They do have some dope watches too..decisions..decisions…

SAVE ME SOME.

A lady friend of ours who recently just got a Cookies n Cream shirt (Cookies n Cream ladies logo classic) decided to rock it today and the attention she received was a little overwhelming to her. She kept sending me text messages every time a guy would say something and she even got compliments from girls as well. Now I thought a lot of the comments she got from guys were funny, so I decided to let you folks hear some of the stuff. The below comments were what I considered the best of all the stuff she sent me.

One guy said “I can be the cookie and you can be the cream”

Another said “You can be the cookie and I got the cream” – This one’s a little cheesy if you ask me.

A rather modest one was “Cookies n Cream, I like that”

And my favorite one and title of this post – Some dude said “Save me some”.

Pictured below is the t-shirt that’s got New York City going crazy. Ladies, we’re sold out of x-smalls and smalls, only a few mediums left. Get yours now by clicking here.

STILL IN THE STREETS.

I was in Soho and noticed that The Cookies Mob have been hard at work tagging the streets with stickers. I whipped out my iphone, walked around the neighborhood and caught some pics….Like the title says “We’re still in the streets”.

MEET KEHINDE WILEY

As some of you who have been following our brand closely may know, one of our major influences has always been art. Whether it’s street art or contemporary art, it doesn’t matter – we just appreciate fresh and creative work. I just checked out the latest work from Kehinde Wiley’s exhibition titled The World Stage : Africa, Lagos-Dakkar, and I’m really feeling the pieces. For those who may have never heard of Kehinde Wiley, he’s an artist who is based out of NY and has shown his work in many museums around the country. His pieces are a representation of African American culture, that he combines with 17th-19th century western style art. So for example, one of his pieces showcases Ice-T in a Napoleon style pose which you can see below. I’ve also included some of his other pieces below and you can check out his website to learn more about him. He currently has a solo exhibition here in NY that will be running till October 26th. Info is below –

UN-MYSPACERS

We get asked this question a lot – “Yo, ya’ll on myspace?” or “what’s your myspace” and everytime, we answer “No”. Yes, you heard right – “NO” and you will never find us on myspace. I repeat, there will never be a Cookies n Cream brand page on myspace. I’m guessing you want to know what our issue is with myspace, so here’s why -

1.) Myspace is officially wack. I used to be on myspace when it was still “cool”. Nowadays, it’s a haven for wannabe “everythings”, pedophiles, and a bunch of losers who think they’re somebody in real life because they have a 1000+ “myspace friends”. It’s to the point where even grandmas and grandpas are on myspace. Now don’t get me wrong, if your girl is showing off sexy pics of herself on myspace, we’ll definitely go check it out but as far as a branded page for Cookies n Cream. NO.

2.) We consider our brand as a “playful luxury” brand. We look at ourselves as what Gucci or Louis Vuitton would be if they were a playful streetwear brand, and that’s what we consider ourselves. As you will never find these brands on myspace, why should you find us on there?

3.) You will find us on Facebook. While this may be contradicting the point above since you won’t find luxury brands on Facebook as well, but we like the cleaner layout and vibe of Facebook. Also, since we’re more of a playful and young brand, Facebook gives us a chance to connect with the people who appreciate and support Cookies n Cream. So if you would like to connect with us for whatever reason, holla at us on our Facebook group page.

4.) The normal route nowadays for a lot of new clothing brands is to do some designs, throw them on myspace, add as many friends as possible, and all of a sudden you’ve got a clothing company. We’ve always been a brand that’s not afraid to be different, and take a different route, even if it means our growth will be slow. We’re not interested in a quick buck. We’re aiming for longevity and actually building a real brand. So while you’re on myspace doing “promotion”, we’ll be out here on the streets connecting with the folks that actually buy our shit.

5.) While this did not really have anything to do with our decision, but it’s cool to see that Nas put FOX NEWS on blast with the song “Sly Fox” off his new album – Untitled. As you may know, Fox owns myspace and Nas even says that on the song in case you didn’t know. Since we don’t rock with the practices of Fox News, then we’re not rocking with their myspace.

Those are pretty much the reasons for us being Un-myspacers. If you can dig it, cool. If you can’t, that’s cool too. Cookies n Cream still loves you :) and by the way, we found this image on the internet that captures the essence of this post.

GNARLS BARKLEY – WHO’S GONNA SAVE MY SOUL

I’ve always respected musicians/artists who aren’t afraid to step out of the “norm” and do something different. Gnarls Barkley is one group that has earned my respect in the highest way possible. They’ve dropped good music consistently while not being afraid to be as creative as possible with their sound and visual, and it’s always refreshing to see shit stuff like that. I just caught their new video – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul and I have to say, they’ve done it again. Creativity at it’s best. I don’t even know how to explain it other than to tell you to watch the video for yourself.

FALL COLLECTION SNEAK PEEK – WANTED

Ok folks, we’re back with another sneak peek at one of the items for our Fall Collection. This here is the Wanted tee. What’s so funny is that we never meant for this design to be an actual shirt. It’s the design for our posters and flyers, but we put up the design on our Facebook group, and people kept requesting it, thinking it was a shirt. So due to overwhelming demand, we’ve caved in and will be dropping this tee as one of the Fall items. Peep the flavor below.

I’m taking all bets to see how long these tees will last in our store when we drop them. I say they sell out the same day we put them up. Anybody feel otherwise and is ready to lose some money?

NAOMI CAMPBELL FOR COOKIES N CREAM?

I was making the rounds of websites that I usually visit and found these images of Naomi Campbell at Coolhunter. They were shot by Mario Sorrenti for V Magazine, and I have to say they look sick. Forget the temper tantrums and the attitude, let’s be real, Naomi has always been one of the best supermodels to ever grace that runway. Growing up, I remember I used to rip out pictures of her in magazines to put up on my wall…funny thing is I still do haha. Be it on the catwalk or pictures, she knows how to crush ‘em. She’s like Jordan when it’s game time, although off the court is a different story. Regardless, you have to give respect where it’s due, and this post is a salute to Miss Campbell. Oh by the way, I know the title of the post was a little misleading but it does sound/look good, don’t you agree?

ALLOW ME TO RE-INTRODUCE MYSELF.

This is KITO

He’s the head cookie monster here at Cookies -n- Cream, and he runs an army of cookie monsters that make our products. While he might look like the nicest creature you’ve ever met, he’s really not the type of monster you want to mess around with. He almost bit off the hand of a friend of ours just because the poor guy said “he looks cute”. Plus it doesn’t help that he runs a crew of roughneck cookie monsters that’ll do some “not so nice things” to you on a single command from KITO. Other than that, he’s really a nice monster as long as we keep him fed with chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. You can also get to know KITO a little bit better by going here.

We’ll be dropping collectible vinyl toys of KITO and his cookie monsters crew in the near future. There’s a lot of interesting characters in his gang crew that you’ll want to meet. We’ll keep you updated on when they’ll drop.

CENTRAL PARK ARTISTES

Free concert at Central Park in NYC this Sunday. Performances by Santogold & Kid Cudi. A-Trak, Diplo and Blaqstarr will also be there. I know it’ll be nuts, so you betta get there on time. Cookies -n- Cream might be there to give away a couple of free t-shirts but you’ll never know if you don’t go right?

FYI – The below is not a flyer, I just took a screenshot to add as an image which is the reason why the words are not legible. For the real deal, go here

FUTURE RIDERS.

I caught some pics at Core77 of this bike called the Icare Motorcycle. It was conceptualized by a France-based design company – Enzyme Design. It just looked so sick, I had to share with you folks. It’s not been said if they’ll be going into production but if they do, the streets of New York will have a problem if I get my hands on one of these things.

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS

One of the things I’ve always loved about my city is that independent, DIY(Do It Yourself) attitude. It’s almost like it’s been ingrained in New York City culture ever since the days when NY was known as New Amsterdam. Out here in NY, we grind. Our attitude has always been “F*** the big establishments” and if they’re not catering to us or our culture, we’ll do it ourselves, and if we don’t know how to do it, we’ll figure it out while we’re doing it. There’s a new indie movie called Beautiful Losers that captures that spirit of New York in its truest form. Featuring legendary artists like Shepherd Fairey from OBEY and Stephen Powers (ESPO) amongst others, Beautiful Losers is a movie about how the DIY attitude took over the art world and influenced a new generation. To give you a good synopsis about the movie, I’ve copied the below directly from the Beautiful Losers website.

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation

In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.

A CLOTHING BAKER’S SECRET RECIPE

One thing that’s always been important to us as a brand is “how can we be different?”. When everybody is doing the same thing, how can we do something else? How do we distinguish ourselves from looking like every other brand out there? You walk in a store and there’s 60 different brands in there, how do you stand out from everybody else?.

This thought process has always been at the core of every decision we’ve made for the Cookies -n- Cream brand. From our clothing concepts, packaging to the different ways we present the brand, and our approach to business, we are always engaged in being unique. While it’s been said that there’s “no new idea under the sun” and I do agree, it’s more so where you take your idea or how you execute your “original idea” that really matters. Everything draws from something else. This is a fact. What counts is how you apply your creativity to make “that something” your own or how to think different than everybody else who has encountered that same inspiration that inspired your “idea”. The purpose of my discourse and reason for this post is to introduce you to a book that can change your life. Whether you’re a street hustler, college student, aspiring musician, budding entrepreneur or just need direction in life, this book is a must read. It is called – Whatever you think, Think the opposite by Paul Arden, a former creative director at the prestigious advertising firm Saatchi & Saatchi. It is a simple and quick read, plus there’s lots of interesting pictures that re-inforce each message. I read it in 15 mins and have actually made it a point to read it at least once a month. Pick it up and after you’ve grasped the message of the book, and become successful in whatever it is that you do, don’t forget to cut us a check.

GYM CLASS HEROES FT. THE DREAM – COOKIE JAR

I guess Gym Class Heroes and The Dream (aka Radio Killaa) must have been thinking about us when they made this joint. We’re not the only ones who can’t keep our hands out the cookie jar hehe The song is dope.. my fav part is “…I got a thing for milano biscotti italianos and I never turn down some oreos if you got those, butter pecan puerto rican or those oatmeal raisin asians, hazelnut brazilians, macadamia caucasians..” haha

BASQUIAT – I AM LEGEND

Graffiti artist turned legendary international artist. On 15 May 2007, An untitled work from him sold at Sotheby’s for $14.6 million. Incredible.

Jean-Michel Basquiat was born to a Puerto-rican mother and Haitian father on December 22, 1960. He died in 1988 due to use of mixed drugs in his Great Jones street/loft studio. His work is amazing, and even today you can still see his influence on modern day artists. If there was ever a rags to riches story before the likes of Jay-Z and others, it has to be Basquiat. He started as a graffiti artist who use to tag “SAMO” or “SAMO Shit” (Same ol’ shit) all over buildings in Lower Manhattan and grew to a successful artist hanging out with the likes of Andy Warhol and David Bowie, and even dated Madonna before she was Madonna. He personified the art scene of the 80s with its drug use, youth culture, sex and money. As much as I would like to give you a full history on him, Wikipedia has done a much better and complete biography, and you can read it here. There was also a movie that came out about his life, appropriately titled BASQUIAT.

Some of his work and pictures below.

On that note, we will be dropping a Basquiat tribute t-shirt as part of our “Under The Influence” Fall Collection. Check back for a post with pics of the shirt. This shirt will also be part of our “I am Legend” Collection where we will drop a t-shirt every season, paying tribute to somebody great that has influenced us in some way. They will all be collectors items and limited, never to be re-produced again. So I’ll advise you to get your hands on one when we drop em.

FALL COLLECTION SNEAK PEEK – COOKIES RULES

Growing up in NYC, you had to be influenced by the sounds of Wu-Tang Clan. Though I dig all the clan members, Inspectah Deck has always been my dude. When they dropped C.R.E.A.M – Cash Rules Everything Around Me, the energy in the city was nuts. I remember hearing this joint everywhere I went. So to pay ode to Wu-tang Clan and their classic joint, we’re dropping the C.R.E.A.M – Cookies Rules Everything Around Me t-shirt. It’s funny because we’re more excited to wear the t-shirt than to actually sell them Lol These tees will move quick so when we put them up for sale, you better get yours. Very limited of course so this is a collector’s item. Check out the graphic below. Also, if you notice, you can see that we embedded a Wu-tang logo in the words and somebody took a bite out of the second O in Cookies…damn Cookie monsters.

This is just one t-shirt from our fall collection. The others are just as sick, and we’ve named the Fall season “UNDER THE INFLUENCE“. Under The Influence because the whole line of tees kind of draws on different things we like that influenced the design of that particular t-shirt. Stay tuned to our blog as we keep dropping more sneak peeks.

AFRO-PUNKING

If you’re in the city, check out this really cool festival – AfroPunk. It’s from July 4th to the 13th, so there’s only a few days left. There’s skaters, bmx riders, really dope music, indie movies and lots of good people. Nice to be in the midst of people like us who aren’t afraid to be themselves. Too bad, we didn’t get our Canon Rebel XT camera yet or we would have tried to get you some pictures. If “our connect” delivers, we should hopefully have our cam within the next couple of days, then we’re off taking pictures like there’s no tomorrow. You folks are in for a real treat, as we’ll be bringing you the sights and sounds of this gritty city we call home. In the meantime, go to the festival. More info here.

Weegee’s City

I caught this article about a legendary New York City street photographer named Usher Fellig aka Weegee. He was born in Austria in 1899 but moved to the Lower East Side in 1910. His pictures captured the streets and attitude of New York City when it was ran by gangsters, hoodlums and crooked cops, roughly from the mid 1930s and on. He caught the grittiness of NYC at a time when you were afraid to set foot outside your house. He actually gave it his own nickname – The Naked City. I don’t think I’m doing him any justice with my brief summary so go here to read about him. Peep some of his flicks below.

“Gunman Killed by Off-Duty Cop at 344 Broome Street” (February 3, 1942)

“Weegee at a Murder” (1942)
